VACANCY FOR VOLUNTEER STAFF

 

Following the restructuring of The West African Institute for Legal Aid (WAILA) in early January, 2018, we are now seeking to recruit volunteers for a host of roles. The volunteers will mainly Work from Home (online): Fundraising Assistant, Legal officer, Program Manager, Publications and Communications Officer, Projects Developer and Manager, Web Design and management.

WHO WE ARE

The West African Institute for Legal Aid (WAILA) is a unique regional and global Non-Governmental Organization, non-profit that is defending liberty and pursuing justice for economically and socially disadvantaged people in West Africa and other parts of the world.

 

WAILA aims to contribute to the development of a fair and equitable justice system which addresses the legal needs of the community, and to improve access to justice by the community (in particular, by economically and socially disadvantaged people.

We provide free Legal services to eligible individuals or groups, in both criminal and civil cases, with a long-term objective to provide free legal representation to eligible individuals or groups before regional and international judicial institutions.

Our services: Providing Legal Information and Education, Legal Advice and Assistance, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and/or Legal Representation.

  1. FUNDRAISING ASSISTANT

Position length: Three days a week for six months, from 1st March 2018 to 31 August 2018, with potential for extension to continue from September 2018 onwards.

Role description: Your role will be to work closely with our Chair and Head of Fundraising to both plan and coordinate WAILA’s fundraising activities for 2018. You will gain valuable experience of fundraising and the organizational side of a charity. You will gain firsthand experience of funding systems and work closely with some of our partners and donors.

Desirable experience: Ideally an undergraduate or graduate, good communication skills, and some ability to demonstrate commitment to charitable causes is a bonus.

  1. LEGAL OFFICER

Position length: Three days a week for six months, from 1st March 2018 to 31 August 2018, with potential for extension to continue from September 2018 onwards.

Role description: Your role will be to implement aspects of WAILA’s litigation and advocacy strategies, conduct research using various research engines and sources, prepare legal and factual submissions, draft briefs; litigate on behalf of WAILA; identify suitable cases for litigation and draft case-related correspondence, Network with relevant human rights NGOs, Capacity building and training of local civil society partners and lawyers, Contribute to WAILA’s publications.

Desirable experience: Ideally the candidate should have a degree in law (LLB and BL), experience with human rights work; experience in the field of economic, social and cultural rights and children’s rights, good communication skills, and some ability to demonstrate commitment to charitable causes is a bonus.

  • PROGRAM MANAGER

Position length: Three days a week for six months, from 1st March 2018 to 31 August 2018, with potential for extension to continue from September 2018 onwards.

Role description: Your role will be to create program initiatives that help the growth of WAILA. Assess key demographic areas for our clients and determine their needs from both a practical and an emotional standpoint

Desirable experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related discipline required. Highly developed written and oral communication skills, 1+ years experience in proposal writing preferred.

  1. PUBLICATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

Position length: Three days a week for six months, from 1st March 2018 to 31 August 2018, with potential for extension to continue from September 2018 onwards.

Role description: Your role will be to support implementation of specific elements of excellent strategic communications strategy, support the management of strategic communications conferences and workshops we attend data tracking and post conference evaluation and actions close outs and support the design and delivery of strategic communications documentation and films.

Desirable experience: experience of promoting social media e.g. Facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Wikipedia, experience of website management, experience and knowledge of Search engine, experience of producing press releases, articles, newsletters or presentations, knowledge and understanding of international conservation and development.

  1. PROJECTS DEVELOPER AND MANAGER

Position length: Three days a week for six months, from 1st March 2018 to 31 August 2018, with potential for extension to continue from September 2018 onwards.

Role description: Your role will be to write, develop and manage all project proposals of WAILA. Achieves operational objectives by contributing information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audits; identifying trends; determining system improvements; implementing change.

Desirable experience: Developing Budgets, Coaching, Supervision, Project Management, Management Proficiency, Process Improvement, Tracking Budget Expenses, Self-Development, Planning, Performance Management, Inventory Control, and Verbal Communication.

  1. WEB DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT.

Position length: Three days a week for six months, from 1st March 2018 to 31 August 2018, with potential for extension to continue from September 2018 onwards.

Role description: Your role will be to design and WAILAs website, mange Web team & process, provide excellent management and leadership to the Web & Digital Media staff and work collaboratively with staff, management, excellent web/digital media project management and estimating experience.

Desirable experience:  1+ year, plus in Web-Design and management experience. Diploma or BA Digital  Media, Interaction Design, or related degree.

Note: Please note that all of our vacancies are unpaid and that staff of The West African Institute for Legal Aid (WAILA) on a volunteer basis. However, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn and share experience thereby contributing to the work of (WAILA).

A Certificate of completion of volunteerism will be issued to the volunteers at the end of the period. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to receive sponsorship to participate in upcoming conferences and Fellowships.
